Before You Consent to Donate Eggs

If you are considering acting as an egg donor, you need to be aware of certain aspects of your role in the assisted reproduction cycle.

The donation cycle as a medical procedure carries with it certain risks.  While the percentage chance that you will be harmed is low, the chance remains nonetheless.  Be sure you carefully read the informed consent documents.  Do not give your written consent to become an egg donor unless you have received acceptable answers to all of your questions.  Those answers should come from the IVF Clinic physician, not a nurse.

Questions which you need to be answered include:

__ What screening tests will be performed?
__ What are the pros and cons of genetic testing?
__ What procedures and medications will be part of the donation process?
__ Have the procedures and medications been thoroughly described?
__ What are the risks of any drugs, procedures and anesthesia?
__ What are the side effects?
__ What information about you will the program keep on file?
__ What are all the currently known ways that your eggs or resulting embryos might be used?
__ What information about you will the program give to the recipient?
__ What costs might you have to pay if you need treatment for complications?
__ At what point can you no longer change your mind about the donation?
__ Do you fully understand and agree with all conditions?
